To have surgery or rehab with rest. These were the choices Alex Rodriguez  of the New York Yankees faced. He selected to have surgery on his hip that will keep him out about 6-9 weeks.

The Yankees are losing a big chunk in the middle of their lineup and they will not be as feared for opposing pitchers. They still have a starting rotation that makes other teams drool over. If Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada come back healthy and able to produce runs, they will still be strong even without one of the best players in the sport.

This could be a good thing for New York because the third baseman will not be a distraction. Though Red Sox fans will be disappointed when the Yankees first come to town because they will not be able to chant “A-Roid.”

The AL East race just became more interesting with this news. There will be more questions as this season progresses surrounding Rodriguez after he admitted in February to taking steroids from 2001-2003.

Manny Being Manny in LA

Manny Ramirez signed a 2-year contract with the LA Dodgers on Wednesday.  The deal pays $25 million in the first year with a player option for $20 million more in 2010.

Ramirez addressed the media in LA on Thursday.  “Hey, sometimes it’s better off to have a two-year deal in a place that you’re gonna be happy, than have an eight-year deal in a place that you’re gonna, you know, suffer,” he told reporters.

There has been no reaction from Red Sox management to the statement.
